FIREFIGHTER DEAD ON SCENE
Large blaze on Western Avenue leaves two deaths, one being firefighter Bruce.
In the early hours of this morning, a call from Mr Hawks bee of James Street reported a fire on Western Avenue. Two fire engines sent down to discover a car crashed into a shop window. The cause of the fire is likely due to the car’s engine; however, two young boys were spotted fleeing the scene.
The now deceased firefighter, Bruce Miles, reported movement in the driver’s seat of the car. After a heroic attempt to save the teenage boys life, a ball of flames burst from the car’s engine engulfing both.
Bruce Miles, 28, had served with Bradburn Fire and Rescue for eight years and was due to be promoted to crew manager by the end of this year. He was said to be a "popular member of the crew; a bit of a joker who loved to laugh". Wife Jane and his two sons Peter, 6, and Robert, 4, left devastated by their loss.
A further six engines and 30 firefighters were called to attendance, and the blaze became more intense.
Recovered CCTV footage by the Police, shows three youths in the stolen car as it raced up and down the high street just before the crash. It appeared the driver lost control and subsequently crashed into the shop. They were described as wearing baggy denim jeans and dark-coloured hooded jackets, aged about 17, about 5ft 8in tall and of slim build.
Bradburn DIY centre was reportedly 80 per cent damaged by fire. Lynne-jones solicitors, to the left of the store, have 40 per cent fire damage to its ground floor.
Traffic disruption in Western Avenue, James Street, High Street and cross street reported to last a further 24 hours.
Two crews remain in attendance monitoring 18 gas canisters that have potential to explode, however can be contained once cooled down.
Station Officer added "My crews did not hesitate to try to rescue the young lad trapped in the car. Every day, firefighters put their lives on the line to save others; this was no exception."
